Video games sales have continued steadily even during this poor economy. Video game products have sold $1.7 billion dollars since the early part of 2008. This says a lot about the video gaming industry and their future. The public continues to purchase all the latest and greatest new releases of games and systems as quick as they are released.
The newest systems, including the PS3 and the Nintendo DS Lite, which is just a smaller adaptation of the DS, are a far cry from the beginning systems. They make the Magnavox Odyssey seem like a figment of the imagination. With the technology we have today, it is likely at some point in time the PS3 and DS Lite will suffer the same fate.
Playing video games is not just for kids anymore. There are million of adults of all ages playing Nintendo, PS3 and Xbox 360. This used to be mainly a pastime for the younger generation; males in particular. The graphics have a lot to do with the interest being shown in video games.
While on the subject of graphics, the addition of motion sensitive controls is the latest craze we find in new video gaming systems. Removing all limits and focusing on the virtual reality world is the ultimate goal of videogame developers today. This will be the future of the video games.
Instead of merely being a game, it will be a virtual reality experience. Sort of like the holodeck on the Star Trek shows. Interacting with characters and functioning in virtual reality is being explored at the present. You have to admit it would be awesome to have your own holodeck to create scenarios for your enjoyment.
Currently, virtual reality research has shown limitations to the movements you can make while sitting in your living room. This is what the gaming industry is working on right now. Being able to read brain activity is one way to get around this. Don’t laugh; there was news in May 2008, that the scientists at Pittsburgh University had a real breakthrough in this area of development.
In May 2008, during a study they found that a monkey used its brain waves to control the robot’s arm. The robot’s arm was manipulated by brain waves that fed the monkey. With more research they found that the monkey can control the robot’s arm while controlling its own arm.
Motion sensitive controls are the precursor to virtual reality games to play at home. A person wearing a headset would control actions using their brain waves. It’s not improbable that this will happen in the near future. The rate at which the gaming industry continues to evolve is nothing short of a miracle.
Games continue to become more and more realistic as time goes on. The price to create a motion sensitive gaming system is what will slow down the development. A company isn’t going to go the route of developing a real expensive system, if the consumers won’t be able or willing to purchase them. The price a consumer is willing to spend is what a company will determine to spend to develop the systems.
All indications today show game players are much more likely to play a game that can mock actions of real life rather than using a controller. The future of video gaming systems remains to be seen, but it will probably surprise many of us.
