Game Console Vocabulary For Parents

Tuesday, July 27th, 2010

Many of today’s parents, and certainly today’s grandparents, grew up during the years of Atari and “Pong”. Today, the names of games and the components of a game are more complex and harder for parents to understand. Not only have the video games themselves become complex, but the names are a little hard to understand. Video game names may pose as an interesting yet confusing subject for many parents, but there are many ways to become educated on this topic.

Let’s start with the “Wii” previously mentioned. Manufactured by Nintendo, the same folks that brought you some of the most popular arcade video games that could be found in convenience stores in the 70’s and 80’s, this is a state-of-the-art gaming system. The “Wii’s” wireless controllers take gaming to a whole new level and can input actual movements into certain games. The “Wii Fit” is a revolutionary way to exercise with electronic aerobic equipment that can distinguish every move you make. It also incorporates wireless access to your home computer wireless network, so you can access the internet from the console. Playing the “Wii” is as simple as hooking it up to inputs on a television. The “Wii” was the number one purchased game consoles in 2009.

Another frequent item found in video game lingo is “PS3″ (not be confused with “PS2″, its predecessor), which is the acronym for Sony’s PlayStation 3. Original PlayStation controllers were connected by cord, but now cord free controllers are more used. Nintendo “Wii’s” controllers can mimic human motions in their games while PlayStation cannot. “Wii” and “PS3″ both have wireless capabilities. Out of the two gaming consoles only the “PS3″ can play against other players in the same gaming network. This console is noted for its very robust graphics and multimedia capabilities.

Last but not least, we have Microsoft’s Xbox 360. The Xbox 360 has the ability to access Window’s Media Center. You can actually utilize 3rd party services, like Netflix in the USA, to download and watch movies. Participation in online competitions with wireless controllers enhances a gaming experience with the Xbox 360.

In most households it is easy to find two or more different types of gaming consoles. People who have purchased more than one video gaming console usually state the reason as wanting access to features that are only found on each specific model.
