Just about a third of all Xbox consoles have failed to work reliably. Most of these problems have to do with the Xbox running too hot. This condition can lead up to the 3 red light error otherwise referred to as the red ring of death.
The E-74 error is another very common problem. It’s basically the same thing as the three red light error since overheating also triggers it.
So what exactly can be done to reduce your odds of getting the three red light error? I will discuss 3 facets of this which have to do with the way you use your Xbox, where you happen to use it, and maintenance issues.
1.) How to use your Xbox.
The console tends to overheat because the GPU and CPU chips get extremely hot. The consoles cooling system inside the Xbox can not effectively dissipate the generated heat. In addition to this, the cramped internal space within the Xbox makes cooling more challenging.
Thus, playing games nonstop for several hours will most likely over heat your unit. So limit your gaming to one or two hours.
2.) Where to use it.
Keeping the Xbox cool means you should run it in a room that isn’t too warm. If it’s summer, then keep the air conditioner going. Be mindful of sources of heat such as stoves, direct sunlight, and electronics.
The Xbox should be located in an area with plenty of ventilation. Another thing to think about is the consequence of excessive dust. A dusty room invites dust build up inside the console.
Dust acts like an insulating blanket that will make cooling much more difficult. Dust also interferes with the flow of air inside the console.
3.) Upkeep.
Keep your console clear of any grit or dust. Dust tends to build up in the consoles mother board. Use a vacuum to keep the vents clear.
Game discs will also bring dust into the Xbox. So keep them clean by storing the discs in their cases.
Occasionally the red ring of death will occur in spite of your best efforts. But it only makes sense to do everything you can to avoid this problem.
